Personal Lines Senior Underwriter, Underwriter, or Underwriter Trainee
JOB SUMMARY
The senior underwriter and underwriter underwrite complex risks to determine eligibility, analyze assigned portfolio of business to promote Personal Lines profitability and growth initiatives, and promote, develop, and maintain solid working relationships with assigned agents. The underwriter trainee has similar responsibilities; however, he or she will receive training in how to manage a personal lines book of business through development and execution of profitability programs. The position also involves training in underwriting for the purposes of reviewing applications, renewals, and endorsements within proscribed authority levels and time service goals.
SPECIFIC Duties include:
- Evaluating requests from agents and/or insureds and determining acceptability of risks
- Underwriting complex new business referrals, endorsement referrals, new business applications, and endorsement requests within established authority level
- Evaluating underwriting reports related to productivity, quality of business, and underwriting programs on assigned portfolio of business
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring reunderwriting for assigned agents
- Visiting assigned agents
- Analyzing risk reports from Claims and taking appropriate action
- Assisting underwriters and underwriting assistants with questionable risks
- Performing miscellaneous duties as assigned or directed.
CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS:
Education Requirements:
- Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience
Skills / Competencies:
- Proficient interpersonal relations and communications skills (both written and verbal)
- Demonstrated problem solving, negotiation, decision making, and time management skills
- Strong customer service orientation
- Strong knowledge of the personal lines underwriting function
- Moderate computer knowledge and mathematical abilities
- Industry designation of API or CPCU, preferred.
- Senior Underwriter candidates need ten years' experience in related positions
- Underwriter candidates need four years' experience in related positions
- Trainee candidates need two years' experience in related positions OR holding a bachelor's degree.
- AINS series must be completed within three years of placement into position
