MB provides Stay Safe in Place Auto Premium Refund during COVID-19 pandemic

We’re Here to Benefit You

MBG Provides Stay Safe in Place Auto Insurance Premium Refund

We thank our policyholders for taking social distancing seriously during this unprecedented time. By staying home as much as possible, you are helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19, and you are benefitting others.

Staying home means you’re driving less, and Mutual Benefit Group recognizes that. Therefore, we are providing a one-time refund on all personal auto policies, benefitting you.

Each active private passenger auto insurance policy effective as of April 30, 2020, qualifies for the refund. A policy is considered active if it was issued on or before April 30, 2020.

We thank you for allowing us to provide you with insurance protection, and we are here for you whenever you need us, especially if you need assistance as the result of a claim. It is our hope that you and your family stay safe and well.

Refund FAQs

What is Mutual Benefit’s Stay Safe in Place Auto Insurance Premium Refund?

The refund is a one-time credit on all active Mutual Benefit private passenger auto policies in effect as of April 30, 2020.  We have instituted this refund because policyholders are driving less and reporting fewer claims during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is an “active” policy?

In order to qualify as an active policy for refund purposes, the policy must have been issued on or before April 30, 2020.

What do I have to do to get my refund?

You do not have to do anything to receive the refund. It will be applied as a credit to any outstanding balance on your auto policy premium payment, and your installment payments will be adjusted accordingly. If you paid your premium in full, a check for $50 will be mailed to you.  If you are expecting a return premium for another change you may have made to your policy, it will be combined with the change.  If the amount owed is less than $50, you will receive a check for the difference.

Why is Mutual Benefit Group refunding premium?

Mutual insurance companies like Mutual Benefit Group are there for their policyholders. We work for the financial well-being of our policyholders. At a time when our personal auto policyholders are driving less and therefore reporting fewer claims, refunding a portion of their premium payments is simply the right thing to do. Providing the refund is in line with our corporate values of integrity (doing the right thing), community (caring for those who count on us), and dependability (being there for our policyholders no matter what).

How much is the refund?

The Stay Safe in Place refund is a one-time premium credit of $50 for eligible.

Who is eligible for the refund?

Mutual Benefit customers who have a private passenger automobile policy in effect as of April 30, 2020, will receive the $50 refund.

When will I receive my refund?

We are working on applying credits to outstanding balances now. You should see the change in your installment premium on your June invoice. If you paid your premium in full, you can expect to receive your refund check in the mail in June.

How was the payment amount determined?

The refund amount is based on our estimate of the decrease in auto claims costs that will result from our policyholders spending less time on the road.

Will my rates go up to offset the refund?

No. The refund is based on a decrease in claims costs because most of our policyholders are driving fewer miles as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds are not connected to rates and will not result in a rate increase.

Will I need to pay tax on this refund?

No. The refund is not considered taxable for the customers, as long as the amount you receive does not exceed the amount you paid in auto insurance premium during the calendar year.

I appreciate the refund, but I have lost my job as a result of the pandemic and am having trouble paying my bills. Can you help in any way?

Call our Operation Service Department at 1-800-283-3531 from 8 a.m. to 5 pm. Monday through Friday. Our representatives will explain options available to you for deferring payment. Please understand that if payment is deferred, the amount you will owe as of your next invoice may include more than one installment payment. You may also want to call your insurance agent to see if he or she can help you find additional ways to save on your premium payments.

I have a homeowner policy with Mutual Benefit. Do I qualify for a refund on that as well?

We are not seeing a decrease in homeowner claims as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, we expect they may increase as more people are spending more time in their homes during the crisis. Therefore, we do not anticipate offering a refund on homeowner policies

We understand many of our policyholders, whether individual employees or business owners, are affected financially by government mandates instituted to slow the spread of the virus. We are prepared to discuss payment options with those facing a hardship resulting from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Call our Operation Service Team at 1-800-283-3531, Extension 2790 with questions or to discuss these options.
